Swimming Gala 2012
Sea Scout Swimmers Conquer All
The oldest trophy in Scouting history has found a new home in Hamble. The prestigious “Otter Trophy” is presented to the winners of the Sea Scouts National Swimming Gala, held at HMS Raliegh, Plymouth. The team from Hamble ( U12 W.Whitlock, F.Godkin, D.Willis and U14 T.Habgood, C.Habgood, G.Hoye and D.Brook ) won trophies for first place in U12 individual freestyle, U12 Medley Relay, Scout Line Throwing (Rescue Relay), the Scout squadron Relay (freestyle) and the U12 overall trophy. The group travelled to Plymouth for the weekend event and were accommodated by the Royal Navy at HMS Raliegh. Not only did they swim, but had the opportunity to learn some seamanship skills and took part in some powerboating, from Jupiter point. They competed against teams from 22 of the largest Sea Scout Groups in the country and were not favourites to win, despite 5 months of training. They were lying in 3rd place overall after the heats on day one and desperately needed to pick up points in the finals. | Individually, the swimmers had only made 2 of the 6 finals, but their ability to work as a team paid dividends, with them winning 3 of the 4 relay events.
Clean changeovers, smooth starts and not a single missed throw in the rescue relay meant they clinched the trophy with a win in the final event. Results were the closest they had ever been, and there was an anxious wait while the event organisers checked and double checked all the results. The scouts were delighted with their win, the first in Hamble Sea Scouts 104 year history. They are now making plans to retain the trophy in 2013 and match the achievements of the Hamble Explorer Scouts (14 to 18yrs) who won the equivalent trophy in 2009 and 2010.
